Western Grebes Dancing - 2021-001
This was one of the most memorable experiences in nature that I have ever witnessed. I watched this beautiful pair of Western Grebes perform in what seemed at first glance like perfectly choreographed dances. The fact is that it doesn't always work first time. For some of them it's their first season on the dance floor and they need to rehearse a little before they get it just right.
Having reviewed my series of Photographs I believe that this male is a more experienced dancer than the female. The male forced the female to change direction. The female in changing direction lost her grip on the mouthful of nesting material that she brought to the dance and seemed rattled and even sank a little.
Once the female dropped all of the nesting material she regained her composure and rose higher in the water.... they continued with the dance.
