Sunday Swap

"The meet will be at Sherburne."

That would have been called down to me by the engineer of NYS&W train BH1 on the 4008 on this particular day. Sundays on the Utica Branch during the years with trains running on both ends would usually provide a meet somewhere in the "middle" to exchange cars traveling to and from interchanges on opposite ends of the line. During the week everything would get thrown off a "schedule" and cars were just dropped where they could be dropped and picked up later by the opposing job. However Sunday provided crews on duty around the same time due to not working on Saturdays most times and a meet was usually in the making. In this shot the the BH1 on the left has already made the moves and is is position to head south while train UT1 gets part of it's northbound cars of the "metals" track and stays in clear for the moment. Both trains will finish whatever work needs to b done at Sherburne, NY and leave the little village in peace for at least the next 24 hours.
