Workers install PV panels on Natatorium in Atlanta, Georgia; Georgia Institute of Technology

Government-industry partnerships are creating more durable photovoltaic modules that can be integrated into building designs. The 1996 Summer Olympics aquatic center incorporates a PV system made by Solarex that provides 340 kilowatts of dc electric power - the world's largest building-integrated, roof-top PV system - as well as 9 kilowatts of ac modules in the visitors center. The project is cost-shared evenly among the DOE, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Georgia Power. The U.S. PV industry employs 15,000 people, most of them in high-quality jobs, including installation, servicing, and maintenance. Here, workmen from the Solarex Corporation install PV modules on the Natatorium, the main swimming facility for the 1996 Summer Olympic games in Atlanta, Georgia.
