Magul Mal Viharaya - Yala
There are two Magul Mal Viharaya in Sri Lanka. Both are associated with Viharamaha Devi and King Kavantissa and their marriage. According to one legend, Princess Viharamaha Devi landed in Kirinda, at a place near the present day Kirinda Raja Maha viharaya.
The Magul Mal Viharaya on this album is said to have been erected as monument to mark the wedding of King Kavantissa and Princess Vihara Maha Devi.
According to the other legend, Princess Vihara Maha Devi landed near a location in Eastern Province called Lahugala (near Pottuvil). The King married Princess Vihara Maha Devi at this temple and on their way back to the King's palace in Ruhunu Magama, they rested near this place, near the present Yala National Park and the vihara was established in memory of their visit.
This Magul Mal Viharaya is near Yala National Park and can be visited on the way from Kataragama to Kirinda on the Yala-Kataragama road.
