Weheragala Tank, Lunugamvehera National Park, Uva
Weheragala Reservoir dam was built blocking the Menik Ganga that flows near the Weheragala area. Weheragala Reservoir provides water for the needs of the pilgrims who travel annually and seasonally to Kataragama for religious purposes. It was also built to cater to the needs of the people living in Sella Kataragama, Kataragama Town, Katagamuwa and the surrounding areas. It provides drinking water for wild animals living in Lunugamwehera National Park throughout the year, especially during the drought season.
By diverting excess water supply to the Lunugamwehera Reservoir via the canal line found inside the Lunugamwehera & Yala National Parks, the ground and surface are kept moist and this fulfils the regular water needs of native plants and native wild animals which inhabit the park. The canal line carries water along a 25 km distance towards Lunugamwehera. The surrounding area is full of plants, trees, shrubs, and very pleasant to the eye with its beautiful natural scenery that is abundant with wild animals. Weheragala Reservoir surface capacity is 1,416 hq. The entire catchment area and surrounding environment is ideal for watching migratory and native water birds.
