Winter In Norrie Park

Located just south of the Upper Peninsula town of Ironwood, Michigan this large and charming park along the Montreal River features picturesque landscaping from the 1920s as well as dirt and paved trails along the river and meadows. This recreational area was named in honor of A. Lanfear Norrie, who in 1882 began to explore for iron ore on the Gogebic Range. His discovery resulted in the opening of the Norrie Mine in Ironwood. There was an active CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) camp on this site from 1933-1942 that included four 50-person barracks in the 1940s, but none of those buildings have survived. From the camp, the CCC workers fought forest fires and built bridges, roads and campgrounds. The Norrie CCC location was complete with a gas station, lagoon and other accommodations for the 200 workers. When I was growing up, Norrie Park was a popular place for swimming and featured a bathhouse, concession stand and a sandy beach with lifeguard tower. Though now abandoned, this beautiful spot brings back many fond memories from my childhood.
