Horizontal Falls

A tourist jet boat with four powerful outboard engines struggles to maintain its position against the surging tide through the gap.

Even if it could make headway against the rushing tide, there is no way this jet boat can 'climb' the 3 - 4 metre vertical wall of water that confronts it.

Twice a day, the ocean tide forces its way through this narrow gap, peaks, then turns and forces its way out in the other direction.

The watermark on the shoreline shows the significant changes in water level that occur in this process.
