080729-Xi-Cai-Will-Kerr-4pm05

A collaboration art project of Xi Cai, Director of C.X. Silver Gallery, and Will Kerr, Director of Gallery XIV, July 28-29, 2008 in Boston on Thayer Street in the SOWA Arts District. Will and Cai each selected a portrait image of theirs. Will prepared the image as a series of photocopies that they assembled back together. The images were put up within the 'Abraham Obama' billboard tableau outside the row of galleries using billboard paste. Then they followed with adding paint to the image. The image of the little girl is of Cai's mother when she was four. The image is from a 50x32" oil on canvas that is inspired by a half-inch square photo image of her mother's face from the 1930s. In the photo, her mother is in a garden looking up at birds and singing to them. The birds are perched near - but not in - cages. In the 2008 portrait and in the collage version posted in the 'Abraham Obama' wall, the girl's expression reaches out to the viewer. Is she singing? Crying? Calling...for what? What does it mean to you for the little girl to be calling out amidst the row of giant Abraham Obamas? The live video internet streaming was set up by Isaac Meister under Will Kerr's direction. The video streaming has been at abrahamobama.org/view-the-stream. This art event is part of a show entitled 'a politic.' More information on this show can be found at www.galleryxiv.com/. More information on Xi Cai and her art can be found at www.cxsilvergallery.com/html/cxxc07.htm.
