Nice - Lycée Masséna

Carabacel | Avenue Félix Faure/Rue Gioffredo/Rue du Lycée/Rue Désiré Niel

Become too small and not functional enough, the Lycée Impérial was demolished in the early 20th century. At its location, a new boys high school was built. Work was interrupted by the war between 1915 and 1923.

The architect profoundly modified its initial plans throughout construction. This results in an open and ventilated ensemble, generally symmetrical, consisting of multiple buildings built of Turbie stone. The ornamentation of the façades is rich: smooth or sculpted stone, wrought iron, mosaics, colorful ceramic patterns, etc.

The school is distinguished by its Clock Tower, located in the south field angle in the axis of an Old Nice street (the Rue du Marché).

Arch. Henri Ebrard

1909-31

It was not until 1963 that he took the name "Lycée Masséna" - in memory of André Masséna, Marshal of the Empire born in Nice - then it became a mixed institution in the 1970s.
