Still bedecked in withered garlands from use upon a national commemorative excursion the previous year, Standard Type 56009 stands cold at the rear of Konya roundhouse. Each gathering when steamed in 1999 had affixed national flags.
The classic large 2-10-0 is Esslingen 4399 of 1940 and remains in servicable condition today.
My arrival in Konya was the product of a 5-hour coach journey from holiday base in Alanya but helped at destination onward to the depot by chauffeur collection! A chance conversation with a dignitary returning from convention duties on the coast led to escorting me onward to the depot and pulling the necessary strings.
