Mt. Erebus, Antarctica

From the sea ice on McMurdo Sound. This is an active volcano and home base for Shackleton's expeditions and R.F.Scott's last first fatal trip to the South Pole.

The black stuff is volcanic cinders and ash which forms Ross Island. 12,400 ft. southernmost active volcano.

From sea ice about 12 ft thick. Made on film that was damage by repeated freezing.
