Heffala's 12th Birthday

Heffala Humphrey turning 12 years old on October 30 but sometimes posed for early party shots for flickr.

Heffala loved birthday parties and she loved Christmas. She loved those hollee roller balls and red was her favorite color.

She was the only pet that sensed things were changing with the packing and moving things around. She was unsettled at times and would complain to me and I knew none of the dogs would be happy with the move.

Heffala had this health issue and the vet said she would be lucky to reach eight or nine years old. She was so athletic and smart and active and loved long walks until she had issues with her rear legs. She still could play and get around on throw rugs but could not do the stairs like she once did or go on long walks.

I decided to have goals for her and the next one was Christmas and decided to paint her pumpkin with the Christmas holiday theme.

She was so happy and often looked at that painted pumpkin and I feel she knew it was about Christmas.

The move was Dec 3rd......

The tree was up on Dec 4th.....after we'd had a snow storm after the last load was moved over. I'd gone back to the other house climbing huge snow drifts to finish cleaning there and hauling a few more things as new owners were waiting a week.

I recall how Heffala looked at the decorated tree and she just loved the Christmas tree. This house had carpet so she seemed to have better traction.

She never made it to Christmas but I had her new hollee roller ball and City and Bessie's gifts.

She did not understand that morning and neither did I.....and the gal who lived next to us for quite a few years left her work to meet me at the vet clinic.

I did not know what to do......and only pet lovers will understand.....but in my heart I knew it was not her time but with circumstances and in new neighborhood and the situation .....

She looked up at me when they gave the calming shot before the last shot . She looked right at me and barked at me three times in the way she'd bark when she was upset or did not agree.

I'm happy I gave her the Christmas pumpkin and that she was able to enjoy the tree for eight days.

Her side kick was the garage sale Pluto dog for fifty cents and many flickr stories about those two and they always had lessons.

This was a happy day here on the three season porch.....and a lesson to treasure each day we have.
