Our Lady of The Rosary Roman Catholic Church opened 1937. Prospect South Australia

Prospect’s new Church will be one of the most beautiful church buildings in the State…and a striking tribute to the work of the architects, Messrs Jory and Pointer…Sunday last when the foundation stone was duly laid by His Grace.

A large number of the clergy, secular and regular, with many people, were present when His Grace Archbishop Killian , assisted by Very Rev Prior O’Reilly OP, Very Rev B Curran OP (Melbourne) and Rev Father Candler OP, Priest in charge of Prospect, performed the ceremony of the laying of the foundation stone.

In places the walls of the new building have been far advanced.

Very Rev Father Alphonsus CP, Glen Osmond, spoke of the assistance which the work should receive from the people. He would be brief, for a lengthy appeal for financial support at a time when there was such interest in dictation tests and cricket tests and other high matters would pall his audience.

Very Rev B Curran, Provincial, looked upon the new building as a magnificent ornament to the town of Prospect. It would be something of which parishioners would be proud. Father Candler deserved the support he had received, for the new church would owe its existence in large measure to him. He was rightly beloved by the people.

The Mayor of Prospect (Mr Whittle) expressed his pleasure in being associated with Father Candler, his friend, on the occasion. He could assure Father Candler of the wholehearted support of councillors. He, as chief magistrate was delighted to be present.

His Grace the Archbishop expressed his congratulations to the people of Prospect on the splendid project which they had undertaken. He paid tribute of admiration to the architects. He also congratulated the contractors on the excellence of the work already done.

He was told that approximately the following quantities of materials would be used in the construction:—250,000 bricks, 350 tons of sand, 130 tons of metal for concrete, 80 tons of cement, 30 tons of lime, 250,000 super feet of oregon, and 35,000 lineal feet of jarrah flooring, and 15,000 specially blended tiles used for the first time in church construction in Australia. All that material, with the exception of the oregon timber, was produced in Australia, and the work on the new building gave employment to 25 workmen.

Over £700 was raised as a result of the subscriptions received up to date,

St Patrick's Brass Band was in attendance and rendered a pleasing programme both before and after the day's ceremonies. Ref: Southern Cross (Adelaide SA) Friday 11-12-1936.

Father Candler and Prospect Church

Rev Father C B Crowley writes: The Cathedral opening excepted, the mass of fifteen hundred people who assembled at Prospect at the opening of the new Church of the Holy Rosary was assuredly the largest brought together in our time for the opening of a church in this State. The occasion was worthy of the assemblage. In a special manner was the assemblage worthy of the Priest, Father Candler.

For twenty-five years, and a little more, has this Priest worked north of the Torrens. Ref: Southern Cross (Adelaide SA) Friday 10-12-1937.

Rosary Church, Prospect, Consecrated

Father Candler’s Memory Recalled

Memories of the late Father Vincent Candler OP must have been especially vivid in the minds of all who witnessed the consecration of Rosary Church, Prospect, on Saturday, December 2 [1950]. For it was Father Candler who built that noble church: more than two years have passed since his death on July 13, 1948.

Consecration Ceremony

Early on the Saturday morning the Blessed Sacrament was removed from the church, and the consecration proper began at 7.30.

After the third procession, the doors were opened to allow the Archbishop to bless the inner walls and to begin the consecration of the High Altar.

A Low Mass offered by the Archbishop, brought the long ceremony to an end.

The vestments worn by the Archbishop during mass were the work of the Dominican Sisters of North Adelaide.

On Sunday, December 17, the Archbishop returned to Prospect in order to sing the Pontifical High Mass in the newly-consecrated church.

Before Benediction, His Grace, attended by V Rev Frs Bayard and O'Rorke, proceeded to the blessing of the crucifix, a memorial to the late Father Candler. Ref: Southern Cross (Adelaide SA) Friday 5-1-1951.
