The Torrens Weir was built in 1880 to dam the River Torrens and form an ornamental lake.
The weir was officially opened 21 July 1881 by the Governor of South Australia.
An earlier timber weir, constructed in 1862 by prison labour, was destroyed by floods in 1872.
