The town of Copley was proclaimed 27 August 1891.

The town was originally known as Copley, after William Copley MLC, Commissioner of Crown Lands.

 

Leigh Creek railway station was in the middle of the town and the hotel was known as Leigh Creek Hotel.

 

In 1916 Lachlan McTaggart of Wooltana Station was successful in having the railway station renamed Copley.

 

Leigh Creek was established approximately 4 kilometres from Copley.
