At Mannum

The Jubilee celebrations passed off very successfully on Tuesday. The children attending the Mannum public and private schools and those from the Caloote, Hildesheim, and Pellaring Flat schools assembled in front of the institute, and after being photographed marched in procession to the picnic grounds near the river, where addresses were delivered by Messrs D Shearer, C F Wanke and I McMillan.

The medals were distributed, and all present joined in singing the National Anthem and in cheering the Queen.

Sports were got up for the youngsters, and bags containing refreshments were handed round and tea provided.

The proceedings, which had been enjoyed by all, terminated at 4 o’clock.

The Millendella Brass Band discoursed sweet music during the afternoon.

PELLARING FLAT

Arbor day was celebrated here on the 19th ult. A very large number of friends and relatives of the school children assembled including the Mannum Agricultural Bureau, three ex-Chairmen of the Local Board of Advice and Dr Moule, a member of the existing board.

Before planting the trees the teacher, Mr Billinghurst, drew the children into line, and introduced Messrs Wanke, Shearer and Preiss who each delivered a speech.

A number of trees were than planted by the children, each having one under his or her special care, under the direction of Mr Preiss.

An extensive programme of foot and other races, skipping contests, football, and other games was carried out.

Part songs, action songs, rounds, and recitations were then given by the children, who were afterwards regaled with high tea, lollies, fruit etc, kindly provided by the residents of the district and friends in Mannum.

This was the most successful Arbor Day which has been held here. (Adelaide Observer 11-8-1900)

The annual picnic was held at Eight Hours’ Day at Pellaring Flat, when a large number of scholars, parents and friends attended.

The anniversary and picnic were a great success.
