Redhill Institute and Soldiers' Memorial. South Australia

A large concourse of persons gathered together on Easter Monday to witness the laying of the foundation stone of the Redhill Institute.

The proceedings commenced by the children of the Government School singing “The Song of Australia”, after which the President of the Building Committee, the Rev. Samuel Gray, proceeded to lay the stone, which was performed in the usual manner. The reverend gentleman spoke at some length, reviewing the growth and progress of the town and district since its earliest days.

Messrs Henry Treloar and George F Claridge also spoke of the benefit of education, and demonstrated the usefulness of Institutes generally. The children then sang the National Anthem.

A picnic was held afterwards, followed by an entertainment, the room in which it was given being crowded to excess.

Mr Peter Rowland JP occupied the chair, and the whole affair was most successful. About £30 was realized.

The Institute opened 29 January 1879.

At the institute on Saturday a concert and dramatic performance were given by the Redhill Christy Troupe. The building was crammed to the doors. The new grand piano, which cost £105, was used for the first time. A proscenium with two sets of scenery has also been added to the stage, the effect of the improvements being marked. After World War One an addition was made to the front of the institute and a foundation stone was laid by S March on 24 September 1919, marking the addition as a Soldiers’ Memorial.
