Bellingen Court House 1910. New South Wales Australia

Built by George Edward Moore 1845–1917.

Additional information** -

Undaunted by the lack of suitable stone or brick, he cast concrete blocks and bricks in the river bed. A strong and versatile tradesman, George Moore left his mark on the district, on his family, and on those who worked with him to serve a growing community.

Born at Putney, London in 1845, George Moore migrated to Australia while still in his teens and arrived on the Bellinger in the later 1860s.

He married Elizabeth Ann Frisby, daughter of one of the earliest cedar getters, John Frisby, on 14 December 1874, at Raleigh and came to live at Boat Harbour (Bellingen) in 1881, to continue a career which produced a vast array of private and public buildings on the mid-north coast and further afield.

His work was much in demand by the authorities and he was commissioned to build in many parts of New South Wales, including Port Stephens, Kiama, Pooncarie and Warialda.

He died in 1917, still working, leaving the Methodist Church at Bowraville in an advanced stage of construction.
