The Centaur Memorial was unveiled by Senator, The Hon. John Faulkner, Minister for Veterans' Affairs and Minister for Defence, Science & Personnel on the 14th May 1993. The 50th Anniversary of the sinking of the Australian Hospital Ship Centaur.
The Commander and crew of the United States destroyer USS Mugford rescued the survivors on the 15th of May 1943.
To effect rescue Mugford was at considerable risk of attack by enemy submarines. Members of the crew showed great bravery in entering the shark infested waters to aid survivors.

The Walk of Remembrance is dedicated to the memory of those brave men and women who lost their lives in the forty-one allied and Australian Naval and Merchant ships sunk along Australia's coastline by enemy action during World War Two.
