St. Mary's Island, Malpe, India. 23rd January 2024
St. Mary's Island is a group of four islands off the coast of Malpe, India. It is also known as Cocconut Island. In 2016 it was made one of Indias 34 National geological monuments.
It is made of a basaltic rock (basaltic-rhyodacite) formed as part of the Decan traps around 88 million years ago. The lava cooled underground forming polygonal columnar jointing as it cooled.
The island is only small (we walked right around it), its about 500m by 100m.
