Global Futures

I focused on the secondary research/image of luminous tube sponges, then recorded it with paint and ink. I followed its quality to adapt to textiles. I used Angelina Fibres to capture the luminous ink.I machine embroidered the surface on dissoluble fabric to capture the layered quality. I then repeated the design and moulded to create a 3D textile sculpture. I feel the mask is visually and conceptually successful, as the mask demonstrates humans adopting new skin to cope with the new environment. But it is not a practical wearable piece.

250 Word Statement

My mini portfolio consists of work from both A Level and Foundation, where I have investigated a variety of concepts. This includes primary research through photography and observations where I have demonstrated how I draw from initial research and record ideas to develop to textile sculpture and surfaces. My material manipulation and experimentation through materials and techniques is constantly expanding to explore new applications and alternative combinations. Keeping a drawing, and gallery journal while also drawing from life, informs my perspective. A past project from A level was responding to a natural event. From research of Charles Darwin’s ‘Natural Selection’ I developed the concept of humans adopting sea creature’s features as a response to a flood, biology would demand humans to physically adapt to their surroundings.

From foundation I explored the Higgs Boson particle, I wanted to visually communicate all life being connected by the particle, through imagery of different animals and patterns that connect. Then investigating the Science behind beautiful landscapes, how elements of nature make up landscapes, such as the energy from the sea and weather cycles. While equally considering how natural forms are made by landscapes due to the rock cycle and volcanic layers. Presently, I am investigating snakes shedding their skin. I began to research animals ‘own architecture’. I found the decay and renewal of snake skin interesting as the process is alike the rebirth of the animal. I considered this renewal process for humans, instead of being continual to be alike a renewal of life.
