Injured Rainbow Lorikeet

It pains me to look at these photos, poor thing. This Lorikeet had been injured and if you see in the pic it appears to be his foot that is broken or sprained. I was in contact with a local wildlife carer who told me to keep an eye on it and if I could catch it to bring it in, I was unable to catch it. So I watched and hand fed the bird some grevillea blossoms and water, he seemed ok with that. Last weekend was terribly hot and on Sunday the temps reached 43C.

Poor thing went to ground and hid under a pile of wood I have in the backyard. I was outside for some reason around lunch time and I could hear it screeching, I ran down and I could not believe my eyes the Lorikeet was being attacked by a Blue Tongue Lizard - I raced to get my garden gloves and ran back, he was deep in the bromeliads and I was pushing them down so he could climb out, while this thing was pulling at him, he came toward me and I grabbed him. Phew! I thought he was safe and promptly took him to the carer who administered pain relief, re hydration fluid and Lorrie food.

It seems the blue tongue inflicted one too many injuries on this bird or it already was too injured and he died overnight.

What a loss I felt, I had been keeping a close eye on this bird for a few days as was the birds partner or sibling (prev pic). The rescue out of the broms was also very frantic and I could not be sure if it was a Blue Tongue, it could have been a snake for all I know.. all I could see is the wriggling and colour of the creature. After all Blue Tongues do not eat birds do they???

I will upload a more positive shot of Rainbows shortly.
