Swallow Windsock
This Welcome Swallow nest was discovered on a cliff ledge near the ocean. An interesting observation was the long line of plant material or string attached to the nest which was streaming with the changing wind conditions. I recalled seeing a similar hanging line (much shorter) on another nest, although that was a hole in the underside of a rock ledge. I didn't think much of it, until this second observation where the nest is constructed mostly from mud. Speculate that this is used as a location device and/or windsock in the classic sense. Clarification would be welcome!
