A Hefty Inheritance

Lowther Castle, located near Penrith in Cumbria was originally built in the 18th century. In 1957 the Duke who inherited it decided it was too much bother for him to keep and had most of it demolished. His words were “it was the least of his inheritance”. Eventually, the next generation had it restored and it's now a popular sight. It was one of the most beautiful castles we visited, with extensive grounds and gardens.
