Deadpool 2: A Review
Saw this last Saturday with my friend, so it’s quite a late review. She liked the movie as well as I did, and nearly dropped the popcorn several times at some extremely funny scenes.
We get the movie opening two years after the first Deadpool movie, so it’s 2018. Wade/Ryan Reynolds still goes on missions, and then tragedy strikes, then he sets out to exact revenge, then meets Thanos-ahem, Cable, Domino and create X-Force to stop a kid with fire powers from Hunt from the Wilderpeople.
About the story, it’s quite the plain typical superhero movie story, with time travel tropes, prevent someone from doing something terrible, but the fourth wall breaks and characters basically make it more fun. I loved all the cast as usual. I liked Domino, Negasonic, Cable, the Merc himself, as well as Peter. The supporting cast is good, but X-Force doesn’t get the treatment it really deserves. Cable and Domino are expected to have more story, so I believe they’ll have more development through the X-Force movie. I loved the visuals, costumes and weapons, tone (because there are some sad moments that worked well). action sequences and a heck lotta humour, though sometimes the jokes go...over a bit.
Bad stuff/downsides for this movie? A few supporting characters, the villains, and X-Force are pretty underdevopled. There’s no real villain that stands out as much as Ajax did, though he’s not that memorable of a villain. Juggernaut’s voice was actually a surprise when I checked out the voice actor. Sometimes the jokes are really forced that I didn’t laugh at, but I’d say I laughed through 95% of the movie.
Score for this movie: 9/10, perfect. Leitch’s work on DP2 is impressive, so you might wanna check out John Wick or Atomic Blonde again, even for those who never watched it. And bonus, stay for all the credits, you totally don’t wanna miss that, it is f***ig hilarious.
(P.S., one of the X-Force members is played by a famous actor through a cameo, I’m not saying who.)
