Aglaia sp, collected from plot 1 in the Danau Girang Field Centre by A.L, E.N, K.H, R.L, L.M and N.dV on 14/09/14.

 

Plot 1 contains riparian forest at the edge of an oxbow lake, GPS position 5,244356 ; 118,022277. Riparian forest often has high tree diversity and density. This type of forest is commonly found on the edge of a rivers, streams, ponds, lakes and some wetlands.

 

The Family Meliaceae contains 51 genera and 575 species native to tropical and subtropical regions. Most family members are trees with large compound leaves. Examples: Melia azedarach-ornamental tree, Swietenia, Entandophragma and Cedrela-economically important timber trees, Azadirachta-grown in India for timber and medicinal oils. (Mabberley, 2008), (Encyclopaedia Britannica).

 

Plots: 1-Pangi KOCP (limestone), 3-1 KOCP (dry lowland), 5-5 KOCP (dry lowland), 6-6 KOCP (dry lowland), 11-1 DG (riparian oxbow edge), 19-9 DG (semi-inundated).

Found: 120 Indomalaysia, W. Pacific.

Description: some unbranched pachycauls and rheophytes.

Uses: A. edulis, A. exstipulata, A. cucullata-timber, A. korthalsii-cultural fruit tree in Malaysia, A. odorata-male flowers scent tea and linen, for colds and asthma (Mabberley, 2008).
