BS_DG_3_37_D-Dillenia_excelsa
Dillenia_excelsa, collected from plot 3 in the Danau Girang Field Centre by J.M, J.LR, H.S, T.G, N.P and J.W on 14/09/14.
Plot 3 contains semi-inundated forest, GPS position 5,245233 ; 118,022547. Semi-inundated forest tends to have low tree diversity with little undergrowth however lianas are often abundant. This forest type is characterized by periods of inundation between 3 and 6 months.
The Family Dilleniaceae contains 13 genera and 300 species indigenous to the tropics and warm climates, especially Australasia. Trees to sub-shrubs or herbs or lianas, many with apparently primitive features e.g. conduplicate carpels. Examples: Dillenia-cultural, ornamental, edible fruit, timbers (Mabberley, 2008).
Plots: 2-young KOCP (riparian Kinabtangan edge), 4-3 KOCP (riparian Kinabtangan edge), 6-6 KOCP (dry lowland), 7-7 KOCP (dry lowland), 8-9 KOCP (riparain Kinabatangan edge), 9-10 KOCP (riparain Kinabatangan edge), 10-11 KOCP (dry lowland), 11-1 DG (riparian oxbow edge), 12-2 DG (semi-inundated), 13-3 DG (semi-inundated), 14-4 DG (riparian oxbow edge), 15-5 DG (riparian next to oil palm), 17-7 DG (semi-inundated), 19-9 DG (semi-inundated), 20-10 DG (semi-inundated oxbow edge).
Found: Peninsula Thailand and Malaysia, Sumatra, Bangka, W. Java, Borneo, Philippines.
Description: Tree up to 40m high with 20m clean trunk, 75cm diam, gray to brown bark. Flower petals bright yellow (Slik, 2009).
Ecology: In undisturbed and secondary mixed dipterocarp forest up to 700m alt. Mostly on alluvial sites (swamps, riversides, periodically inundated) but also found on hillsides and ridges. Also on sandy to clayey soils and limestone (Slik, 2009).
Uses: Timber is used for house building (Slik, 2009).
Synonyms: Capallia multiflora, Capellia pauciflora, D. excelsa var. borneensis, D. excelsa var. pubescens, D. excelsa var. tomentella, D. glabra, D. magnoliifolia, D. magnoliaefolia, D. mattanensis, D. oblonga, D. pauciflora, D. secunda, D. tomentella, Wormia excelsa, W. excelsa forma grandifolia, W. excelsa var. borneensis, W. excelsa var. pubescens, W. excelsa var. tomentella, W. grandifolia, W. oblonga, W. pauciflora, W. tomentella (Plant List, 2010; Slik, 2009)
