The Best Little Gun Shop in Wiltshire

Mendip Rail's 59002 Alan J Day makes short work of the 1 in 100 gradient while ascending Dauntsey Bank at Tockenham Wick with a couple of thousand tonnes of Limestone known as 7Z12 11.42 Merehead to (Royal) Wootton Bassett.

The image was taken from bridge MLNI 8565 on Trow Lane, the view of course now blighted by the Great Western Main line electrification infrastructure which has been present in this location since 2017.

Going in the other direction is an unidentified FGW HST working 1C30 11.30 Paddington to BTM which will pass the site of Dauntsey station (closed 1965) just before diving under the B4069 road bridge.

To the far right of the road bridge, the area known locally as 'Dauntsey lock', a tall red brick chimney marks the location of 'Dauntsey Guns' - a business selling firearms that is described on their website as 'Wiltshire's friendliest gun shop' - blimey, imagine what the county's 'least friendly' gun shop must be like! Personally I'm surprised and a little worried that Wiltshire has any gun shops.

Our old friend 7Z12 runs from Somerset, through (Royal) Wootton Bassett and up to Swindon where the loco swaps ends to head 'back to Bassett' as the customer Johnsons Aggregates yard is only accessible from the down line.

Until I noticed the chimney and started investigating it I was going to go for a "Bank"-related angle. y'know the kind of thing;

"Giving a good Account of itself 59002 Alan J (bank holi-) Day makes quite a Statement as it Charges up Dauntsey Bank to Transfer another load of stone to the customer" - on Balance I'm glad I didn't, and you can take that to the...errr..Post Office!

My image caption of course references the 1978 Broadway Musical and 1982 film starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton 'The Best Little Wh***house in Texas'.

Which reminds me of one of my favourite jokes - the one about the dyslexic pimp who mistakenly bought a warehouse - classic.

Well OK, seeing as how you've asked, my favourite joke is the one about the 2 cannibals having a meal - the first cannibal says "I don't like my mother-in-law" and the second cannibal replies "well just eat the chips!" - still funny after 50 years, no?, strange it didn't go down too well at my brother's wedding either, especially with her side of the family...
