Gorillas in the Mest(o)
Two examples of the wonderful Class 350, 350.002 'Titanic' (nearest) and 350.006 'Waldemar' operated by ZSSK, seen between duties at Nové Mesto station. Less than one hour later 006 drew the rake of ECS into Bratislava hlavná stanica forming the stock for Ex 609 'Tatran' service to Košice which left behind 004 'Hugo'.
Manufactured by Škoda Works in Plzeň and introduced by Czechoslovak State Railways in 1974, the small fleet of 20 dual-system locomotives has diminished to 16 currently operating examples - each individually named but not carrying any name-plates or similar identification that I can see.
Apparently/incredibly the nickname "Gorilla" commonly used by rail enthusiasts relates to the use of a picture of the locomotive on a 1989 postage stamp of Guinea-Bissau - a small West African country that has no Gorilla population(!?!)
Gorillas in the Mist is a 1988 biographical film based upon the work of American primatologist and conservationist Dian Fossey and follows Fossey's work to study and protect Mountain Gorillas in the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda. Actress Sigourney Weaver was nominated for Best Actress at the 1989 Academy Awards (Oscars) for her portrayal of Fossey but amazingly was overlooked for her sterling work in 1999's Galaxy Quest - unbelievable! (although on refection it was her Wonderbra which did most of the work!).
