St. Remigius

St. Remigius-Kirche in Büdingen, Germany.

This church under the patronage of the Frankish saint Remigius was likely first founded in the 8th century as the proprietary chruch of an unknown local lord. Shown here is the oldest surviving section of the building, a stone hall dating back to the 9th century. The nave that gives the building it's T-shaped floor plan was built in the 11th century and in the late 14th century, a rectangular choir was added. By the late middle ages, however, the church situated far outside the town walls of Büdingen proved impractical and the parish was gradually moved to the newly built Marienkirche during the 15th century. By 1495, St. Remigius was thus reduced to a cemetary church as which it is used to this day.
