The Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, headquartered in Brussel, was founded in 1876 to apply the successfull business model of the Pullman sleeping cars in Europe. In cooperation with state railway companies, CIWL operated luxury trains troughout Western and Central Europe and the Balkans, including the famous Orient Express. During WWI, the international train travel came to an end and the CIWS assets in Germany and Austria-Hungary were taken over by the newly formed MITROPA.
