But is it Art?

I have been to Blenheim a few times and it is a beautifully elegant and luxurious palace with amazing works of art and decor.

This time there was an art exhibition going on at the same time by a French artist called Yves Klein who unfortunately died in the 1960's at the age of 34.

His major work was based around a single colour which he patented as International Klein Blue. His art involved painting canvases and other everyday objects with this shade of blue. He took casts of sculptures which he painted blue in order to create a symphony of monochrome.

I have read his wikipedia page about his artistic philosophies and what he was trying to achieve and I am afraid to me it sounds like a whole load of pretentious claptrap.

In amongst the glorious art at Blenheim, alongside a sculpture of Queen Anne were these 2 blue naked men. Among the finest french porcelain were plates daubed in chunky blue paint. On the walls among the priceless paintings were canvasses, plain apart from the solid colour they were painted or else randomly splashed over and you only keep because it was your 3yr old that did it.

I didn't get it at all, to me it was harsh and strident, no symphony going on there, it felt like an insult to the master craftsmen of centuries ago. And according to one of the guides, apparently 95% of the visitors agreed with me and about 80% of the staff!

Although she did say I was lucky I didn't attend last years exhibition as it was a series of arrangements of bones of women who had died in horrific circumstances in the Bosnian wars.

The suffering of innocent people in all wars in all countries and at all times is never to be forgotten, but to put the bones on display and call it art? Not sure about that one.
