The Original 6234

Circulating the internet recently is a photo of an old GN SD7 borrowing the reporting marks of this C&S SD9.

If you're wondering why that is, it's because BNSF already recognizes MNTX 6234 and so it's easier to have the GN 558 as 6234 until BNSF delivers our new baby to JSRH. Yes, the Cargill SD7 seen in Litchfield has a new home.

That means that 6234 is no longer the only high-hood SD unit in the fleet, and is now the third BN painted 6-axle on the roster.

Of course, only 6234 is supposed to look BN. SDP40 325 is still planned to wear GN Big Sky Blue, and the new SD7, 558 will wear its as-delivered Empire Builder orange scheme. Personally, I'd like to see it as 839 (BN paint with the C&S patch). I can dream.

Anyway, in this image, the 6234 sits outside in winter sunlight during the winter break from Osceola.

The SD9 was donated in 2003 by BNSF and the rest is history. It was built in 1959 for CB&Q's subsidiary Colorado and Southern. The 839 wore CB&Q paint with C&S marks, it later wore BN paint with C&S marks until it became the 6234.
