Saluting Battery

Built in 1566, the Saluting Battery is Malta’s ancient ceremonial platform, from where gun salutes are fired throughout the year to mark state occasions, national holidays and to greet visiting naval ships to the island. Between Monday and Saturday, a time gun is fired at 12.00 (noon) to mark the passage of midday, and again at 16.00, as it was done for centuries until commercial clocks became the norm in the 20th century.
