Collared Dove

Collared Dove / streptopelia decaocto. Northumberland. 18/06/24.

'WHY.'

Really not a bird I associate with rocky shores, so I was surprised when this Collared Dove kept dropping down to the beach!

I watched it pecking between some of the pebbles, though what it was finding I have not idea. I've read since that Collaed Doves aren't fussy eaters and will peck at pretty much anything.

Other bird species noticeably focussed their feeding efforts on the strand line, where there were plenty of invertebrates to be found. However, you can see the CD's chosen spot looks quite barren. Perhaps it may have been swallowing larger grains of sand, to aid digestion?

All ideas welcomed ...
