Grass Snake

Grass Snake / natrix helvetica. 09/07/22.

'IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT THE EYE.'

I liked this view of the Grass Snake as it lay partially submerged and stationary. My focus was on its eye and the strand of water weed adorning its head.

Grass Snakes use sight and the sense of smell (gathered by their Jacobson's Organ), to locate prey. There is an element of surprise in their ambush technique. If they make a successful strike, they swallow the prey immediately and often, still alive!
