Little Grebe

Little Grebe / tachybaptus ruficollis. Derbyshire. 02/04/19.

These Little Grebes are nesting at the side of the canal under the overhanging vegetation.

Five minutes prior to making this image, the female had swam across with soggy reed strands trailing from her beak. She was followed dutifully by her mate ... (who carried nothing!) and they both disappeared from view.

With more nest construction completed, the pair skulked in the shadows, peering out and waiting for the right time to swim into open water again. They are such edgy, retiring little birds and it is a joy to watch them from a respectful distance, you have to pretend you're not really looking!
