Great Spotted Woodpecker DSC_3660
Great Spotted Woodpecker / dendrocopos major. Calke Park, Derbyshire. 30/11/16.
I was privileged to have two GSW's interacting with each other close to where I was concealed in Calke Park. They showed up a couple of times landing within six feet of me. I don't know if they were a pair or whether one was a parent bird who was still being pestered by a youngster born in the Spring.
The bird shown was the neatest and cleanest of the two and lacked a red nape spot. This denotes it as a female. Whenever there was an altercation, it was she who backed down and flew off a short distance with lots of loud calling.
