Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design
The principles of design demonstrated (describe the use):
Emphasis: The out-of-focus background allows the top of the twigs to be the focal point and the clearest thing you see.
Movement: The diagonal lines of the twig cause movement in the bottom/center third of the photo, while the light reflecting on the water catches your eye and moves it across the image.
Balance: While the tree may be out of focus in the top right, it somewhat balances the group of twigs you first see.
Repetition: The vertical and diagonal lines of the twigs lead your eyes downward.
Contrast: While you notice the light and dark brown of the twigs, you identify the dark surface of the water, the bark color of the tree, the snow and the light reflection of the water. This creates contrast of light and dark, highlighting certain points of the photo.
Unity: While the background and foreground belong together, the angle that I took this photo at seems out of it. The angle on the twigs somewhat remind me of a bugs point of view, like a little bug is looking out at a far branch to the water, trying to figure out where to fly next. My point is that everything fits together but in a different way.
The elements of design demonstrated (describe the use):
Line: Vertical, diagonal, and some horizontal lines are identified. The thin and thickness of the twigs give it a natural look, I think that if they weren’t there the photo wouldn’t feel complete.
Colour: I love the cool feeling of the photo, especially the green tint of the water and how it works with the brown twigs, and is complementary.
Shape: The organic shape of the twigs looks completely natural and fits in nicely with the photo.
Form: The light brown and the dark brown of the twigs make it appear as 3-dimensional, and notice how the dark side of the background make the twigs look like they’re sticking out.
Space: The spacing between the twigs are negative, while there’s positive in the background when you look at the tree.
Texture: The harsh white lighting on the surface of the pool gives it a really cold feeling, and the lighting on the twigs don’t give them a soft feeling, but rough.
Tone/Value: There’s a fair difference in value for this photo. To your left is the darkness contrasted by shadows, while to your right there’s the snow and the reflection of the water, creating lots of depth.
Objective 4: Lighting
There’s harsh lighting to your right, I like how it was cloudy that day. If it were sunny the feeling of the photo would change.
Objective 5: Post Production (ex. dust/spot removal, resize, contrast, white balance, sharpening, borders, etc.)
Corrections/adjustments made AND/OR techniques applied: I just added contrast so it would add more depth to the photo, and then I resized the photo.
Objective 6: Critique
Analyse your photograph for strengths and areas for improvement (consider elements and principles of design, lighting, exposure, overall feel, etc.)
I like this photo, I love the cool feeling it gives off but the overall feel is still inviting.
