History

My concept of history revolves around family history and how it influences the relationship with Lake Joy. On my trip out there, I was able to piece together some of the history since 1995 from a gentleman kind enough to stop and chat for a while.

I had not been out here since the late 90's, and as I expected, much has changed. The anthropogenic changes are obvious. In the photo dated 1973, much of the shore line is visible in the back ground and is still densely green. In the panoramic, you can see how the homes have moved closer to the shoreline while clearing much of the vegetation along it.

Many of the properties that I remember as a child are gone. When I was young, most where cabins, with the family name either posted at the front of the drive or as a wood plaque at the entrance of the cabin. There was a thriving community around the lake; everyone knew everyone. You can feel the anonymity now. Most properties are fenced or gated now with "No Trespassing" signs. The feeling of belonging is gone. The only property recognizable is Barmuta's. His property is one that was next to my grandfathers. The cabin is the original one. The dock (2014) that is featured in this album was built in the 60's. As you can see, some neglect, disuse and the passage of time have taken a toll on it.
