Originally a hunting ground reserved for the Hohenzollern Dynasty, the Großer Tiergarten was redesigned as a public park in 1742 at the behest of Frederick II. Since then, the park has been a popular place for spontaneous liaisons. Especially in the section of the park southwest of the Siegessäule (Eng.: Victory Column), there has been always been a large cruising area. When the weather is sunny, the lawn between Fasanerieallee and Hofjägerallee becomes the extended living room of the LGBT neighborhood around nearby Nollendorfplatz in Berlin-Schöneberg. Sunbathing in the nude is somewhat the norm in this part of the park.
