John WARRACK, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Warrack of Coventry. He was a crewmember of the merchant ship Essex, which sailed from England and arrived in Grand Harbour on 10th January 1941 carrying a vital cargo including twelve crated Hurricane fighter planes and 4,000 tons of ammunition. The badly damaged HMS Illustrious docked at the same time. Unloading commenced satisfactorily but on the 16th January the enemy launched their blitz on the Illustrious, causing widespread damage to other shipping and the dockyard areas. A 2,000 lb. bomb struck the Essex passing through A and B decks then exploded on C deck, causing extensive damage and killing fifteen members of the crew and seven Maltese stevedores. John Warrack was one of the injured and taken to Imtarfa Military Hospital, where he died from his wounds on 3rd February 1941.
