Santorini: White wines unique in the world

Once upon atime, Californian wine producer Randall Grahm had described the tasting of aRiesling from Alsace (the Muenchberg of Andre Ostertag) as “a handshake with a mountain”. The white drywine of Santorini enables the curious drinker to go one step further. From theweird yet fabulous combination of lime, salt, sulfur and pumice, one can take ataste of the most intense eruption of the last 10.000 years of the Earth’sgeological history.

Sometimearound 1614 B.C., the underwater volcano of Santorini erupted with greaterpower than the Krakatoa of Japan in 1883, releasing a chain of Mediterraneantsunamis, reformatting the island’s terrain and causing a multi-seasonalvolcanic winter that was felt even in China. If the white wine of Santorini isunlike any other on earth, this is mainly due to this volcano.
