Time of Transition
This is one of those images that I didn't recognize what I was seeing at the time but I do now. It is September 1981 and I'm looking eastward on the Illinois Central Gulf tracks in Galena, Illinois. Much about this scene is the way it has been for decades with a passenger and freight station and a couple of railroad service buildings. But note that the siding to the freight station is being removed and in factor the switch on the main is already out. The railroad is slowly transitioning to another era and leaving behind another one.
Today much about this scene is different. The passenger station still stands but all of the other railroad buildings are gone. The area to the left of the tracks is now a park known as Depot Park that is bordered by the Canadian National on one side and the Galena River on another. Railroad space is now recreation space.
