Basking in the Sun in El Paso
Amtrak SDP40F No. 618 basks in the bright December sunlight of El Paso, Texas, during a service stop. I had boarded train No. 1, the westbound Sunset Limited, in New Orleans. I had a USA Railpass and was making quite a journey.
The trip had started at Lambert St. Louis Airport where I boarded a Southern Airways DC-9 for Memphis. In the hometown of Elvis Presley I changed planes and continued on Southern to New Orleans aboard another DC-9. I would ride the Sunset Limited to Los Angeles where I connected with the Coast Starlight to Tacoma, Wash. There I catch the Mt. Rainier to Portland and spend the night in a motel.
The next morning I boarded the Pioneer for Salt Lake City. I flew back to St. Louis out of Salt Lake City aboard an Eastern Airlines 727. Yes, it was quite a trip.
The trip from New Orleans to Los Angeles was my first aboard a long-distance train from endpoint to endpoint. (Scanned from an Ektachrome slide.)
