Bell, Fish & Pulsator...

THE BELL is the cast iron cone (Treble Bell) that engages one of the treble nose bolts, linking it to the inner rim. These are used on all Steinway Model A, B, C & D grands. Not used on smaller grands.

THE "FISH" is the extra thick portion of the rim right at the sharp treble side curve. It was in every Steinway grand until around 1915. It is reputed to stiffen & strengthen the rim (no doubt it does) and make the piano even more profound.... I'm not sure about the other benefits, but it is certainly one of the cool features of this vintage Steinway.

THE PULSATOR: a 1/4" x 1" strip of maple that is morticed into the belly rail, and one of the beams. Patented in 1878, it has been a feature of all Model A, B, C & D grands ever since (not used on smaller grands.) One of our very engaged and particular customers requested we install one during restoration on his Model O grand.... we did, and perhaps this contributes to his belief his is the finest Model O in existence?
