In ihrer heutigen Form entstand die Großkommune, als die Stadt Pargas sich zum Jahresbeginn 2009 mit den Gemeinden Nagu, Korpo, Houtskär und Iniö zur Stadt Väståboland vereinigte. Diese wurde Anfang 2012 wieder in Pargas umbenannt. Rund 60 % der Einwohner sind Finnlandschweden.
