Der Name Delphi leitet sich eventuell vom griechischen Wort δελφύς (delphys) für „Gebärmutter“ ab und könnte auf eine alte Verehrung der Erdgöttin Gaia hinweisen – ein Bezug, der der Antike allerdings unbekannt war.
