balloon milkvetch, Astragalus whitneyi var. whitneyi, Nevada, White Mountains, Fishlake Valley drainage, elevation 3368 m (11050 ft).

 

The common name refers to the distinctive shape of the inflated fruits. This variety is frequent on dry slopes at mostly subalpine and alpine elevations, mainly from the Sierra Nevada eastward across the northern half of Nevada.

 

Also visible in this image is alpine sagebrush (Artemisia rothrockii, White Mountains form).
