In wet years this native desert annual forms extensive dense yellow carpets in early spring, before many of its fellow annuals start flowering. It is found mainly below 1600 meters (5200 feet) elevation in the western Sonoran, western and northern Mojave, and western Great Basin deserts of Nevada, southeastern California, and Baja California.
